It’s quick and simple to sign in with your Google account. It spares you the headache of coming up with unique usernames & passwords for each program or website you use. Convenience is main reason why so many people go with this choice but it’s also important to understand how to stay safe when signing in with google.

But there are risks related to signing in anywhere with your Google account. By doing this, you provide many websites and applications access to your name, email address and occasionally even more private information.

Your information may be compromised if any of these websites or apps have inadequate security or are hacked. Identity theft or privacy problems could result from this.

That’s why it’s important to be careful and take some simple steps to protect your Google account and personal data while using the sign-in feature.

Use Google Sign-In Only on Trusted Websites

The best way to keep your Google account safe is by signing in only on websites and apps that you completely trust. It is usually secure to sign in using your Google account on websites that are well-known, have a solid reputation and take privacy seriously. For example: because Google is a well-known and reliable platform that many people use, I personally use my account to log in to apps like Notion.

However, when using new or unknown websites, you should proceed with caution. It is best to avoid using your Google account to log in to websites that appear unreliable or that you have never heard of. These new websites might not be around for long and they can stop improving their security systems if they don’t succeed. Your account may become more susceptible to hackers or data breaches as a result, putting your private information at risk.

Secure Your Account by Setting Up Two-Factor Authentication

I always use multifactor authentication (MFA), and I highly recommend setting it up on your Google account too. Even if someone gets your password, MFA makes it much harder for them to access your account.

Microsoft Authenticator is an ideal choice to Google Authenticator, which is what I personally use. To keep your account and passwords secure and well-organized you can also utilize a password manager that supports two-factor authentication (2FA).

I also advise using multi-factor authentication (MFA) on any websites or applications that need you to sign in with your Google account. Although it’s not always necessary it provides extra layer of protection and protects your private data.

Setting a strong and distinctive password for your Google account is important, even if you utilize multifactor authentication. Using weak or repeated passwords can put your account at risk because hackers often try common passwords or ones leaked from other websites. Thankfully, there are many password-generation tools available now that make it easy to create strong passwords. In fact, creating a strong password usually takes less time than copying and pasting your old one.

On my Apple devices, I use the Passwords app, and I find it to be effective. However, there are more excellent choices, such as Bitwarden and 1Password. These tools make it simpler to secure your Google account and other accounts by assisting you in creating and storing secure passwords.

Stay Secure by Using Multiple Google Accounts

If you’re worried about using your Google account on too many websites, it’s a good idea to create multiple Google profiles. For example, I have a few accounts — some for personal use and others just for work. This helps me keep things separate and reduces the risk if one account ever faces any issues. It also allows me to set clear boundaries between the services I use for work and personal life.

The good thing is that Google makes it easy to switch between accounts. You can access all your Google profiles from the same login page when signing in to an app or website. So, you don’t have to worry about remembering lots of different passwords. Plus, if you ever need to, you can change your default Google account after adding multiple profiles. This way, managing your accounts stays simple and keeps your data safer.

Manage and Remove App Access to Your Google Account

One simple way to reduce the risk of using your Google account is to revoke access to apps or services you no longer use. This is especially important for new tools that have stopped working or older platforms that no longer meet your needs.

To revoke access, follow these steps:

  1. Go to your Google account settings at myaccount.google.com.
  2. Select Security > Your connections to third-party apps and services.
  3. Find the app or website you want to disconnect your Google account from.
  4. Under Sign in with Google, click Stop using Sign in with Google.

By removing access to unused services, you keep your Google account safer and more secure.
