How to Automatically Link Notes in Obsidian: 4 Smart Tips

Discover 4 smart tips to automatically link your notes in Obsidian and streamline your note-taking process effortlessly.

Obsidian is a robust note-taking app that functions as a second brain to help you arrange your ideas. Its ability to link notes together which makes connecting ideas simple is one of its best features. However, manually connecting every note can be annoying & time-consuming. You don’t have to do it by hand, which is wonderful news. Here are four smart methods to Automatically Link Notes in Obsidian so you can spend less time clicking and more time thinking.

AI Tagger Universe: Automatically Link Notes in Obsidian with AI

AI is everywhere, and when it comes to Obsidian, one of the most useful ways it can help is with automatic tag generation. The AI Tagger Universe plugin does exactly that making it easier to organize your notes. It uses AI to analyze the content of your notes and automatically generates relevant tags. This feature saves you time and improves the connections between your notes, especially if you have a large collection.

I tested this plugin on one of my Obsidian vaults with only a few notes connected. After using the plugin, I noticed that the vault had a much richer network of linked notes, as shown in the pictures I attached.

The plugin works with AI services like OpenAI, Gemini, and Deepseek. If you’re concerned about privacy, you can even run a local LLM using Ollama without sharing your data with external services.

Setting Up the AI Tagger Plugin:

  1. Download and enable the plugin.
  2. Choose the service type (cloud or local LLM).
  3. Select a cloud provider and enter your API key and model name.
  4. Test the connection.
  5. Use the shortcut (Ctrl/Cmd + P) to open the command center in Obsidian.
  6. Type “AI Tagger” to access the options.

What I love about this plugin is how it helps discover hidden links in your notes. The AI-generated tags are accurate and relevant, and you can even batch-tag all your notes at once.

One thing to note: Using cloud services with an API may come with costs, but you can run a local LLM for free.

Virtual Linker: Smart Tool to Automatically Link Notes in Obsidian

Virtual Linker is one of my favorite plugins for automating note interlinking in Obsidian. It’s fast, easy to use, and smart. The plugin automatically finds matching text in your notes—like titles or aliases of other notes—and creates virtual links for you. For example, if you have a note titled “Cold War” and mention that term in another note, Virtual Linker will link them automatically.

These links are virtual, which means they don’t show up in your graph view or clutter your vault. If you want to turn a virtual link into a real one, just right-click and select “Convert to actual link.”

What I love about this plugin is its soft-linking feature. Not every auto-generated link is useful, so this gives you control without overloading your note network. You also get several settings to customize how it works—like whether to include aliases, headers, or adjust case sensitivity.

It’s a great tool to keep your notes connected without the manual effort.

Note Linker: Find and Add Note Links in Obsidian with One Click

Note Linker is another helpful plugin you can use to automate note linking in Obsidian. Unlike Virtual Linker, this plugin doesn’t create links automatically. Instead, it scans your vault for mentions of other notes or aliases and shows you a list of possible link matches. You can then review and choose which links to add.

What I really like about Note Linker is its non-intrusive design. You can focus on writing first, then review the suggested links later and add only the ones that matter—with just a click.

After installing the plugin, you can run it through the Command Palette or use the shortcut button on Obsidian’s left sidebar.

It’s a great way to keep your notes connected without overwhelming your workspace.

Various Complement Plugin: Auto-Complete and Auto-Link Notes in Obsidian

The Various Complement plugin offers more than just note interlinking—it also adds an auto-completion feature to Obsidian, similar to the predictive text on your phone’s keyboard. As you type, it suggests words based on your current note or the entire vault, making your note-taking faster.

One of its best features is automatic note interlinking. When you type the title of an existing note, the plugin will suggest a link. You can simply press Enter, and it will add the link for you, saving you time and effort.

If you like the Virtual Linker plugin but want to avoid using virtual links, this plugin is perfect for you. It helps streamline your note interlinking by adding real links right when you type.

I recommend trying out these different plugins to find what works best for you. If you’re looking for a more hands-off approach, the AI Tagger Universe plugin can tag your notes in batches, while stricter tagging rules can improve the quality of the tags. Afterward, using Virtual Linker will automatically detect and link related notes as you continue working.
