My Experience Using ChatGPT for Task Management (and Why It Didn’t Work)
I tested ChatGPT for Task Management, hoping for a productivity boost. Instead, it felt confusing and inefficient. Here’s why it didn’t work.

I was interested to test ChatGPT for Task Management because I thought it would increase my output. My experience, however, fell short of expectations. Tool was cumbersome & unclear, which hindered my progress rather than aiding in my organization.
What Can ChatGPT for Task Management Do?
I wanted to compare this feature with other task-tracking apps to see how well it performed. For example, in apps like Todoist, I can set recurring tasks easily. ChatGPT for Task Management goes a step further by letting you view all your open projects in one place, offering more than just a simple to-do list.
Create tasks with ChatGPT and schedule them with simple prompts like “Remind me to track my yoga progress at 8 AM every Sunday.” The time, day, & directions can be changed later if necessary.
Option to stop tasks when you no longer require reminders is another helpful tool that gives you greater choice over how you handle your chores.
Why I Don’t Think ChatGPT for Task Management Is Worth It
ChatGPT for Task Management seemed like a disappointment of a basic to-do list application. Creating tasks in ChatGPT wasn’t all that different from using other task management apps like Todoist, TickTick, Things 3, and Microsoft To Do. My task organization in ChatGPT also felt disorganized & less user-friendly.
Compared to other productivity or communication applications, I didn’t think ChatGPT’s Tasks function was particularly special when it came to scheduling. For example, since I already use Slack for collaboration, I found that scheduling projects there made more sense. I mostly use ChatGPT for research and brainstorming, so it felt less efficient for managing tasks.
The navigation wasn’t very logical either. To find my scheduled tasks, I had to go to the profile icon and select Tasks from the dropdown menu. However, creating a new task was confusing. It took me a while to figure out that I needed to expand the LLM dropdown menu. I would have preferred being able to create tasks directly within a dedicated section of the app.
I also experienced problems with app not always generating tasks correctly. For instance, it wasted my time by providing me with a list of to-do applications when I requested it to make a reminder. I was annoyed since it took longer than just utilizing a different app.
How to Use ChatGPT for Task Management More Effectively
Although I don’t see myself using ChatGPT for task management on a regular basis, it might be helpful to others. Here are some methods to make most of this feature if you want to give it try.
1. Use ChatGPT Tasks for What You Already Do in the App
Combining ChatGPT Tasks with your current ChatGPT usage is the best way to make it work. For instance, I use specialized to-do list applications for everyday chores & ChatGPT for personal life planning and long-term goal setting.
Goal monitoring can be supported by ChatGPT Tasks, which reminds users to check in and assess progress every 3 months.
2. Set Reminders for Things You Often Forget
If you frequently forget certain tasks, ChatGPT Tasks could be useful for setting reminders. You’ll need to enable notifications but having a scheduled prompt can keep you on track.
ChatGPT feels more like a personal assistant than just a regular to-do list, making it a helpful extra layer of accountability. Instead of simply listing tasks, it can remind you, follow up, and keep you on track, making it feel more interactive and supportive.
3. Use It for Creative Thinking
ChatGPT’s ability to support creative tasks is one of its advantages over other task apps. ChatGPT can help generate ideas and set reminders but most to-do list apps require manual input.
For instance, you could ask ChatGPT to suggest new daily recipes and remind you to try them. This way, it keeps your routine fresh and engaging.
Although ChatGPT Tasks is still in beta and will likely improve over time, I didn’t find it compelling enough to use as my main task manager. However, it might be helpful if you already rely on ChatGPT for planning and idea generation.
