Top Free AI Flashcard Generators to Simplify Studying
FlashKa: AI-Powered Flashcard Generator
I’ve tried many free flashcard apps and while most offer AI flashcard generation features, they often come with limitations, paywalls or just aren’t that great. I wish I had discovered FlashKa sooner because that’s when I started searching for specialized AI flashcard generators. In addition to creating AI-powered flashcards, this application assists you in interacting with your study materials and getting any questions you may have answered.
FlashKa offers four modes: PDF, Describe, Text and Manual. Since we’re focusing on automating flashcard creation, let’s talk about the first three. In Describe mode, you simply enter what you want to learn, how well you know the topic and what you want to achieve. For example, I entered “Momentum, I know some concepts, I want to master it,” named my deck and FlashKa generated the flashcards for me.
If you have your study materials ready, you can use PDF or Text mode. In Text mode, you paste up to 1000 characters and FlashKa does the rest. Since I mostly study from handwritten notes and lecture slides, PDF mode is my go-to. Just upload the PDF, select the pages and let FlashKa create the flashcards for you, either automatically or by highlighting the material you want.
FlashKa even has an image occlusion feature, which is great for subjects that require visual memorization. However, making flashcards is only half the work; studying them is the true test. FlashKa’s quiz creation features and spaced repetition technique make this simpler.
FlashKa works on a credit system offering 50 free credits daily. Each credit is used when you generate flashcards, quizzes or access AI help. While 50 credits are usually enough for daily use, they might run out if you’re cramming for exams. In that case, you can upgrade to their Beast or Wizard subscriptions which offer 3000 or unlimited credits, respectively.
Brainscape: Smart Flashcard Learning
FlashKa is great, but if you tend to cram all your studying into one night before exams you might find its free credits limiting. If you’re looking for a similar tool that offers a powerful spaced repetition system and is mostly free, Brainscape is worth considering.
To create AI-powered flashcards in Brainscape you have three options: Import/Paste Flashcards, Summarize From Content and Just Tell AI What I Want.
If you already have study material in the form of pre-existing questions, answers or text files like .xlsx, .csv, .txt or even images, you can easily convert them into flashcards using the Import/Paste Flashcards option. While the flashcards might need some adjustments you can use the No, Fix With AI button to have ChatGPT improve them.
The Summarize From Content mode works like FlashKa. Just upload a file (like .docx, .pptx, .txt) or an image and Brainscape’s AI will generate flashcards for you.
If you don’t have any study material you can go with the Just Tell AI What I Want mode. Here you provide the topic and the number of flashcards you want and Brainscape will create them for you in seconds.
While advanced features like adding images and sounds to flashcards or reversing the flashcards require Brainscape Pro, the core functionality of creating and studying AI-generated flashcards remains free. However, the AI tools are only available on the mobile app (iOS or Android), not the web version.
Keep in mind that there’s a file size limit for importing or summarizing content, though Brainscape doesn’t specify the exact limit. Once you hit it, you’ll need to upgrade to upload more files.
Gizmo: AI Flashcard Generator
Let’s be honest—you’ve probably studied from a YouTube video at least once in high school or college. YouTube is a lifesaver when you’re struggling with tough concepts before exams. But watching videos can be time-consuming, especially if you’re trying to take notes or create flashcards along the way.
Watching at 2X speed might seem like a solution (I’ve tried it!), but it often leads to missing key information and rewinding, which just wastes more time.
This is where Gizmo comes in. Its Magic Import feature lets you turn a YouTube video into flashcards just by pasting the link. For example, I pasted the URL of a YouTube video on Momentum by Cognito, and Gizmo instantly created 27 flashcards covering the entire 7-minute lesson.
Once your flashcards are generated, you’ll see that some words are highlighted in green—these are terms Gizmo will quiz you on when you study. It also uses machine learning to ask extra questions and follows a spaced repetition system to improve retention.
But Gizmo isn’t just for YouTube. Magic Import can also convert PDFs, PowerPoints, Google Docs, Quizlet and Anki decks, webpages, photos of your notes, and even real-time lecture recordings into flashcards!
When creating a deck, you can also use the AI Generate button, which opens a chat where you type a topic or question. Gizmo will then generate a detailed answer in flashcard format, ready to be saved.
